October 2005: Welcome to the first Nexgen e-zine

Western Windpower changes to Nexgen

Nexgen - the new name of Western Windpower - has been among the world’s leaders in wind monitoring solutions since 1992. From those early days working in extreme conditions in Scotland, our business now has a global reach, helping to support the next generation of wind monitoring solutions.

To reflect the more international nature of our business it was felt that we needed a new identity that would reflect the company more accurately. As such, Western Windpower has now become Nexgen. All the company literature has been rebranded and many of you will be getting a Nexgen pack in the coming weeks. If you would like to receive new brochures on the Nexgen products, including an updated price list, then please contact us by emailing us.

Our commitment to continuous innovation remains unmatched and we can still offer the same great service and products, plus a bit more as you can read below. We are proud to bring you the next generation of wind monitoring solutions and look forward to helping you see the wind.

Reaching New Heights (and new speeds)

We're very proud to announce the arrival of the world's tallest tilt up wind mast. Developed by Nexgen and reaching a height of 70m, the new HiMast reflects the increasing trend for ever larger wind turbines.

With its new spiral tubing system that can withstand harsher environments than any of its competitors, the revolutionary HiMast series is a must for those looking for the ultimate in wind monitoring technology. And the fantastically robust new design has already been put through its paces by one of our customers.

Our instruction manual clearly states that 6m/sec is the recommended maximum windspeed for installing HiMasts. However, our main installation sub-contractor, Solar Wheel, decided to put this to the test when they recently installed a 70m HiMast in one day with a cross-wind gusting to 20m/second.

“I very much doubt we could have done it with any other mast than the HiMast”, quoted their senior engineer, Bobby Bazalgette. Yet another example of how the design of the Nexgen HiMast enables a successful project to be completed on time in the most inhospitable conditions.

More to Offer

In response to demand we are now offering two new services:

Planning
For those who don’t wish to tackle the British planners we are now offering a turnkey service to obtain Planning Permission for our WindMast and HiMast systems. Our planning team have had experience with most of the obscure planning queries, requirements and conditions – and know how to argue the case!

WAsP
Several customers have asked for WAsP compatible data sets. As part of our data retrieval services we are now able to offer this when Nexgen have supplied the datalogger system. We also have a trained WAsP engineer who can provide further analysis services if required.

For more details on the range of Nexgen services then please contact us with details of your requirements – we can do most anything to help you see the wind….

New Stock

Nexgen have been appointed distributors for NRG instruments. The NRG Wind Explorer offers a more economic alternative for those applications that do not require all the sophistication and GSM capabilities of our more complex loggers. It is ideal for preliminary exploring – as the name suggests – but it can easily be upgraded to provide time series data. We see a big future for this logger in monitoring potential micro-wind applications on buildings - to see if there is actually any wind resource… To read more about the NRG Wind Explorer click here

We have added the Thies first class anemometer to our range of wind sensors. This is a much larger instrument than the more commonly used Vector and NRG anemometers and has necessitated a new boom design. We are aware that several consultants specify the Thies and we are now pleased to be able to offer both the sensor and the appropriate hardware.

New Staff

Three new engineers have been recruited by Nexgen to add to our experienced team.

Gavin Faulks has joined as Sales Engineer, supporting Wendy and helping her cope with the ever increasing number and range of enquiries. Gavin has an engineering degree and benefits from a wide-ranging engineering expertise. You will probably meet him at one of our exhibitions – if you didn’t say hello at Husum already.

Ben Morris has joined as Production Controller working with the team in the factory. Ben comes from a position of Quality Control Manager at an electronics manufacturing company. Nexgen will be registering for ISO9000 in the next few months and Ben is co-ordinating this process.

Mikel Torre has come to join us from Spain, where he recently completed his studies. He has already translated many of our manuals and will be helping our Spanish-speaking customers with business enquiries.
